Mcor Technologies Ltd makes the only line of desktop paper-based 3D printers in the world, and the company received the Best of CES 2015 award in the category of 3D Printers last week in Las Vegas from GeekBeat.tv.
“We are honoured to receive this distinction. This award further validates our SDL, paper-based 3D printing technology as the most unique and best suited to providing wide access to low-cost, professional-quality 3D printing,” said Dr. Conor MacCormack, co-founder and CEO of Mcor Technologies of the award.
The Mcor line of 3D printers use standard sheets of copy paper to create their output.
The printed models can be tapped, threaded, hinged, made water resistant and flexible, and the devices can print hollows and moving parts.
Mcor says one major factor in favor of their technology is that their models can be disposed of in a recycling bin, and they say that means their process supports “cradle-to-grave sustainability.”
According to MacCormack, the company’s printers include the global-standard ICC (International Color Consortium) color map standard, and as a result, Mcor 3D printers produce the “industry’s most accurate and photorealistic, true, full bitmap color.”
This year’s International CES showcased more than 3,500 exhibitors and more than 150,000 attendees from more than 140 countries.
MacCormack added that he was pleased the Mcor devices came out ahead of nearly 60 3D printing exhibitors in the 3D Printing Tech Zone section of the show for the top prize.
Based in Dunleer, Ireland, Mcor makes printers that print ink onto the outside edges of individual sheets of paper, then bond hundreds — or even thousands — of the sheets together prior to cutting them to a final shape required to create a 3-dimensional print.
Mcor was founded by brothers Conor and Fintan MacCormack 10 years ago, and their printers are often purchased by architects, educational institutions, print shops, and design studios.
