Gumdrop Cases recently announced that its turning to 3D printing with its line of cases.
Gumdrop Cases makes cases for smartphones, tablets, iPods and Macbooks. They are “ruggedized” meaning they offer additional protection for your device from wear and tear and the elements. Three-dimensional printing will allow the Oakland, Calif.-based company to offer its customers custom 3D case molding. This feature allows customers to have their logos and other images integrated into the case via four colors of 3D-printed silicone to create a relief effect.
By adding 3D-printing to its arsenal, Gumdrop Cases has an edge on its competition, as no other case companies offer custom 3D-printed case molding. Gumdrop Case’s co-founder David Adam said the company turned to 3D printing because of customer demand.

“Customization was a request that we heard over and over again from our clients, especially schools, who were looking for cases with their logos and in their colors,” said David Adam, VP of Products and co-founder. “We wanted to do something unique, and molding the logo into the case is something that no one else is doing. This provides the durable case users expect from Gumdrop with opportunities for branding, identification or just showing school pride.”
At the moment, it appears that custom 3D-printed logos and images are available for tablets. One option the company offers, ‘The Hideaway’, will allow people to add their one-and-a-half-by-two inch logos to the back support stand for iPad, iPad Mini, Samsung Pro, Samsung Tab 4 and Dell Venue. The other option, the ‘DropTech’, allows a person to incorporate a four-by-four inch logo onto the back of a ruggedized case for the iPad, iPad Mini, Samsung Pro, Samsung Tab 4 and Dell Venue. The base price for each case comes in at about $50. Because of the customized nature of the product, this service is not for the Average Joe. This product seems aimed at corporations and those who can place large orders, as the minimum order for both types of cases is 300 pieces.
In addition to 3D printing, Gumdrop Cases also offers silk screening and laser etching for logo printing. Have you ordered a Gumdrop 3D printed case for your tablet? Let us know your opinion of the product within the Gumdrop forum thread on 3DPB.com
